Ethical and Social Responsibility Issues at Nike - 1612 Words

Introduction Globalization has a profound impact on the ethical and social responsibilities of large organizations. This is primarily true for large organizations with dominant market positions within their respective industries. These companies, due in part to their size and scale, are often garnering a substantial portion of their revenue from countries outside the United States. Growth rates in many emerging countries such as Brazil, Russian, India, and China create large opportunities for these companies to expand their target market while subsequently becoming more entrenched within society. As such, ethical and cultural considerations are warranted with the contexts of these countries. Nike is no different in this regard as the company continues its expansion into China and India. With this expansion, Nike must be aware of potential pitfalls that may occur in regards to the ethical and cultural considerations within these emerging countries. Ethical and Social Responsibility Issues To begin, ethical issues commonly arise due primarily to lack of communication and understanding. Particularly with large organizations with a lack of cross functional teams, communication issues arise. Nike, much like its large counterparts, has specific departments that vary by region. These segments are designed to create a seamless information transfer within the respective region. However, this communication does not expand to the other regions in a timely manner.
